Rune’s Uninspiring Career Record on Grass

He is just 19 years of age and has already touched a career-best ranking of 28th in the world but Rune has a long way to go before he can find some rhythm on grass.

In what has been his first season playing grass court competitions, the clay-court specialist has played two matches on this surface this year and lost both.

Rune’s first defeat came at the first round of Halle Open where he down in straight sets to Pablo Carreno Busta. A loss to Britain’s and now-147th-ranked Ryan Peniston in Eastbourne after being a set up would have come as a bigger surprise.

So what can Rune fall back upon? Needless to say it’s his clay court form, which may not have a direct, technical bearing on his performances on grass but should at least give him an iota of confidence.

Because with a maiden ATP title in Munich and a quarterfinal appearance at French Open, Rune did show he is a man to watch out for the future. Can he dig deep into those reserves at his maiden Wimbledon?

Giron Turns Things Around in Mallorca

Giron has had his time on grass having reached the quarterfinal in Halle last year and following it up with a second round appearance at Wimbledon.

And while he did not begin well this season, Giron’s showing in Eastbourne would have turned things around drastically for him.

Having entered the grass court season on the back of three successive defeats, Giron was shocked by Jan-Lennard in the first match he played on grass in Stuttgart. He followed it up with another loss in Halle, where Felix Auger-Aliassime got the better of him in three sets.

It was finally in the week preceding Wimbledon that Giron got back some of his rhythm as he romped past two opponents – Botic van de Zandschulp and Mackenzie McDonald – both favourites in that encounter.

And while Giron fell fighting to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinal, he looks to have done enough to come into this encounter with a sense of confidence.

Rune v Giron Prediction and Tip

Rune might be the higher-ranked player but Giron’s performances on grass trump his opponent’s and we can back him to win this one.
