Second Wimbledon Appearance for Marterer

This will be the second time that Marterer has appeared in the main draw at Wimbledon. In 2018 he also qualified but lost in the first round.

That was barely a month after making the fourth round of the French Open, which remains the high water mark in Grand Slams as far as he is concerned.

This year, though, he failed to qualify for Roland Garros, but, undeterred, continued to play in clay court tournaments on the Challenger tour, reaching a semi-final in Italy, and then the last eight in France.

In qualifying, he defeated Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru in three sets, and then saw off the challenges of Andrea Pellegrine of Italy, and Nicholas Moreno De Alboran of the USA without dropping a set.

Bedene’s Protected Ranking

Bedene has close ties with Wimbledon.

He lives in London and was granted UK citizenship in 2015, but his attempts to switch his international status were rejected by the International Tennis Federation and he reverted to playing for Slovenia.

It was not long after he was beaten in the first round here last year that Bedene contracted Covid, which, in his case necessitated a protracted break from the sport.

He returned after a eight month hiatus at the French Open, where he reached the third round before losing to Novak Djokovic.

His only match since them was a first round defeat at Rosmalen, but his Protected Ranking guarantees him a place in the main draw.

Marterer v Bedene Prediction and Tip

Whilst there must be a fitness question hanging over Bedene as he continues to recover from his long lay-off, grass is a more natural surface for him than the German qualifier, and he should win if his stamina holds up.

Tip: Bedene to win: 11/13 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
