Tsurenko in Great Form

World No. 101 Lesia Tsurenko has never made it beyond round three in Wimbledon – and that is something which may change this season.

The 33-year-old had a pretty decent campaign on grass this month, having cleared the qualifiers in Birmingham to feature in round one and reaching the quarterfinal in Eastbourne. In the latter, Lesia withdrew from the match against Beatriz Haddad Maia citing fitness concerns but not before beating Camila Osorio, Elena Rybakina, and Magda Linette.

Nonetheless, Tsurenko is armed with some momentum and plenty of experience spanning five WTA finals and 13 ITF ones.

Although most of her present season has gone by in early exits, there is reason to believe that the unseeded Lesia can impress in London.

She started her campaign on a blazing note with a 6-2, 6-3 rout of Jodie Burrage in 73 minutes – winning an impressive 81% of the points behind the first serve.

Kalinina Survives Bondar

Number 29 seed Anhelina Kalinina found herself in a draining affair as she took on Hungary’s Anna Bondar in the opener at SW19.

The match lasted for almost two hours and saw the younger Ukrainian win 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, picking out five aces and winning 68% of the points behind the first serve. Her tally for the season is now 18-12 and like Tsurenko, she too enjoyed a good spell on grass.

Kalinina’s exploits include an elite-eight feat in Eastbourne where she upset Sorana Cirstea, Maria Sakkari, and Yulia Putintseva. Her wins this year are also a lot more prominent as she reached the same stage in the Madrid Open and Charleston 500.

Anhelina also had a fourth-round appearance in Miami; in all these tournaments, the current world number 34 registered wins over Emma Raducanu, Sloane Stephens, Garbine Muguruza, Rybakina, and Madison Keys.

Kalinina v Tsurenko Prediction and Tip

The match can swing either way. Kalinina is the favourite but Tsurenko’s recent momentum and form do inspire confidence in her abilities to carve this upset.

Expect an entertaining match of tennis.
