Basilashvili Survives First Round Scare

At one stage, Nikoloz’s Wimbledon looked like it might be over almost before it had started against the Czech qualifier, Lukas Rosol, the world number 280.

In a match twice interrupted by rain, he dropped the first set on a tie-break, and had to rely on another to take the second set.

Rosol then went again and one break of serve was enough to earn him the third set, forcing Basilashvili to dig deep in the fourth set, and take the match into a decider.

Finally Basilashvili got his nose in front with a break early in the fifth set, but the Czech was not beaten yet, and the Georgian had to save two break points on his own serve next game.

Rosol was not to win a further point after that.

Halys Wins All French Clash

Halys is making his Wimbledon debut, never having made it through qualifying before.

Fortunately, his ranking meant he was spared the rigours of qualifying this time, and he faced a familiar foe in the form of compatriot Benoît Paire, the world number 73 in the first round.

It was Paire who started the better and an early break of serve enabled him to claim a rain interrupted first set.

However, two consecutive breaks of serve by Halys in the second set allowed him to level things up.

And Paire found himself on the back foot when he was broken at the start of the third set. One more break gave the set to Halys.

The fourth set went with serve until the seventh game when Paire was broken once more. There was no way back for the 33 year-old after that, and hays was able to serve out.

Basilashvili v Halys Prediction and Tip

Based on relative experience at Wimbledon and Grand Slams, Basilashvili will start favourite, but he will know he will have to play better than he did against the qualifier on Monday.
