Stefanos Tsitsipas v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came at the 2019 Washington Open where Tsitsipas won in straight sets to enter the last eight.

Tsitsipas Needs Four Sets against Little-Known Qualifier

Alexander Ritschard was 25/2 odds to win his opening encounter against Tsitsipas and yet, the Greek number one found the going tough against his opponent.

In the end, Tsitsipas, who was coming off a title win in Mallorca, registered his fifth win in a row when he took down Ritschard in a hard-fought four-setter to reach round two here for the first time since 2018.

Tsitsipas won 7-6 (1), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a matching over three and a half hours, despite losing his serve four times during the encounter. He needed to come back from being 1-4 down in the opening set scoop it up in a tie-breaker, and then eased to a two-set lead when he broke his opponent twice.

And while he was unable to break Ritschard for most part of the third set, it looked like he was in control of the match when he dropped his serve in the 11th game. Ritschard served it out to take it to the fourth where he broke Tsitsipas in the very first game.

The Greek player retaliated with a break of his own and then repeated the dose in the 10th game as Ritschard served to stay in the match.

Tsitsipas will hope to raise his levels coming into the later stages but for now there would be relief he has broken his first round hoodoo.

Thompson Rips Past Roberto

Roberto Carballes Baena wasn’t given much of a chance in his opener against Jordan Thompson but little did one see the carnage that was about to come.

The Aussie ripped past his opponent in one of the more straightforward opening round matches of the men’s competition, winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in a mere hour and 47 minutes.

Thompson, who had won a couple of Challenger events on grass in the lead-up to Wimbledon, shared a break of serves with Carballes Baena in the first five games of the match but from there on it was one-way traffic.

The Aussie broke his opponent for the second time as Carballes Baena served to stay in the set and then proceeded to break him five more times in the match to wrap up the encounter.

And while bookmakers aren’t giving Thompson much hope – he is 41/10 to win this – he could actually have a chance to trouble Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas is a better player overall, sure, and has won a title but his overall form makes him bit of a suspect. Especially against a player who can hold his own on grass too. We back the Greek to win but not before Thompson has won a set off him.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win AND Both players to win a set: 18/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
