Sure he had made it to the final of the Eastbourne International last week but he wasn’t expected to do a lot more than pose bit of a challenge for Felix Auger-Aliassime in their Wimbledon opener.
That he took his Canadian opponent down in four sets is ample testimony to the improvement Cressy has shown over a short period of time.
Only last year, Cressy was ranked 172nd in the world and struggling to qualify even for Grand Slam events, and here he is with a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open under his belt, a career-best ranking of 45 at the moment and now a win over Auger-Aliassime.
Cressy won 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) in a match lasting more than four hours but one that would have given him a belief that he belongs to this level. And with the draw opened up the manner it is, it gives the American a chance to make it to the fourth round at the very least.
For starters, he has fellow countryman and experienced Sock to get past.

Sock Showing Signs of Old Sparkle
Sure, most of his results have come at the lower level and the Challenger circuit, but Sock has done his bit on grass to suggest he would be no pushover in this encounter.
And that also stems from manner in which he took down Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets in his opener.
Sock won 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 15 minutes, slowly dismantling his stodgy opponent, not allowing him to take any control and losing his serve for the first time only in the third set.
What Sock will now want is to use this very experience as a former world number eight to try and down the in-form but green Cressy.
