World no. 42 Sara Sorribes Tormo got off to a flying start as the Spaniard knocked out American qualifier Christina McHale in straight sets.
Although the Spaniard was broken once in the first set by the World No. 261, she stayed control for most parts of the match to register a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Sorribes Tormo converted three of four break points in the first set and two of six in the second, while saving a total of five of six break points that she faced during the one hour and 16 minutes contest.
The win puts Sorribes Tormo into the second round at Wimbledon for the third time in her fifth try. She has never gone beyond the Round of 64 but will be hoping to change that stat this year.
Although the Spaniard had come into the tournament with a 1-1 season record on grass, she is a decent grass court player and will fancy her chances in the second round.

Debutant Tan Wins Three-Hour Marathon Against Serena
Harmony Tan made a dream debut at Wimbledon, knocking out seven-time champion Serena Williams in the opening round of the American’s 21st appearance at the grass court major.
It was an edge-of-the-seat battle which swung from one end to the other, but after three hours and 11 minutes the World No. 115 outlasted the former no. 1, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10-7).
While it was always going to be difficult for Williams, who made her return to doubles in Eastbourne after more than a year’s absence, she made a valiant comeback attempt but couldn’t cross the finish line.
After the match was tied at one-set apiece, both exchanged a break in the first six games of the deciding set. Then Williams broke in the ninth game to go up 5-4 and serve for the match but a determined Tan broke back immediate to keep her chances alive.
Two games later, Tan held a match point on Williams’s serve, but the 23-time Grand Slam champion refused to give up. She saved the match point, to take the set into the deciding set tiebreak and looked to be cruising after she build a 0-4 lead in the tiebreak.
But once again Tan showed her ability to dig deep as she won five points in a row. There was no stopping the Frenchwoman from that point on, who scripted a famous win that she will savour throughout her life.
The 24-year-old Tan, who is 4-3 on grass this season, was a semifinalist at the WTA 125 in Gaiba. Can the first round win inspire her to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career?

Sorribes Tormo will be wary of Tan, after the fight she put up against Williams. Tan too will feel a lot more confident going into this one. Expect a close contest, with the Spaniard edging past Tan.
