Niemeier Stuns Kontaveit

22-year-old Jule Niemeier went up against the number two seed Anett Kontaveit in her first match against a top 10 player on the tour. Against all odds, she stunned the heavy favourite Estonian in a near-flawless performance with 6-4, 6-0.

The underdog German needed just 58 minutes to deliver the biggest win of her career by capitalising on Kotnaveit’s 24 unforced errors to her 13 and striking as many winners. Jule also enjoyed a much superior service game, winning 79% of the points there.

Having knocked out Xinyu Wang in the preceding round in a similar fashion, Niemeier has positioned herself nicely for the coming matches.

Now ranked World No. 97, her season comprises two titles (ITF and Challenger) with an overall tally of 25-13. Most of her success has come in low-tier events and interestingly, her grass build-up mainly ended with early exits in Berlin and Bad Homburg.

Tsurenko Dismisses Kalinina

Lesia Tsurenko prevailed in the Ukrainian derby when she took on the number 29 seed Anhelina Kalinina. The veteran among the two had to dig deeper to win the match 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, fighting for two and a half hours.

The win follows a straight-set rout of Jodie Burrage in the opener.

One more win and Tsurenko will find herself playing in the second week at Wimbledon – something that the 101st-ranked player has never been able to achieve.

For what it’s worth, Lesia does have some momentum to back her dreams. Most recently, she reached the quarterfinal in Eastbourne as a qualifier after upsetting Heather Watson, Camila Osorio, Elena Rybakina, and Magda Linette. Before that, she cleared the qualifying matches to reach the main draw in Birmingham.

As for her overall form, the 33-year-old has not been that convincing as she lost in the early rounds in all other tournaments this season. Her last singles title came in March 2018 with her last WTA final coming in January the following year.

Tsurenko v Niemeier Prediction and Tip

The match can go either way. Niemeier’s rout of Kontaveit is no guarantee that the same will happen to Tsurenko – especially given that she has had some traction on the surface already. Expect another tight affair here.
