The grass prep for Botic van de Zandschulp was not that great but he’s been playing rather well at Wimbledon. A solid win in round one, and even better win in the 2nd round was good enough for the 3rd round.
The win over Emil Ruusuvuori is a notable one because Emil won the opening set. Botic played quite erratic in that one having 14 unforced errors which he reduced moving forward. The aggressive play persisted and he was able to find some good solutions against his opponent.
It was also notable because he lost on grass earlier this year to the same player at home in Den Bosch so overcoming that hurdle was really important for him. It was just a pretty strong showing against a player who did not play his best. Botic will need to keep that up if he hopes to continue this solid run.
It’s been a very good year so far with a 24-16 record and 5-3 on grass. The Dutch player will fancy his chances in round 3 because he’s the better player at the moment.

Gasquet Mauls McKenzie in Four
Richard Gasquet played twice in the Wimbledon semifinal and he’s always been a fairly good player on this surface. He’s not on that level anymore due to his age but the French player has turned the clock so far this year. The win over Sousa was a good one because it took a lot of energy out of him.
It wasn’t evident today against McDonald as the French player played much better than his opponent. He moved swiftly around the court and attacked well with his backhand, especially on the return. The American is a good player but today he was easily outplayed.
Such a confident Gasquet is always trouble, especially on grass but he will face a tough proposition against Botic. McDonald had plenty of chances today and he didn’t take them.
If Gasquet allows so many tomorrow as well he will find himself in a very tough position.
van de Zandschulp v Gasquet Prediction and Tip
I’ve been rather impressed by Gasquet so far this year but I’ve also been impressed by Botic. The Dutch player objectively showed more and his level has been more stable. He also beat tougher opponents and I think that confidence will work well for him here.
Gasquet will put up a fight, he might even steal one set but I don’t think he can keep hip this level for a 3rd match in a row. I’d be quite surprised if he does but even if he does, I think Botic should win.
