Back-to-back wins over Romanian players have put World no. 12 Coco Gauff into the third round at Wimbledon. The 18-year-old American is now a win away from a third fourth round appearance in three attempts.
Gauff, who capitalised on just four of 25 break points in a tough first round outing against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, looked much more assured in the second round as she hustled past Mihaela Buzărnescu in an hour and 20 minutes.
Gauff didn’t face a single break point on Thursday, while she broke Buzărnescu twice in the first and once in the second set for a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory. Gauff fired 24 winners, 10 aces and won 85% points on the back of her first serve.
The French Open finalist had a tough start to the tournament, though, having to come back from a set down to beat Ruse 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Having put up a much improved performance in the second round, Berlin semifinalist Gauff will now be looking to keep the momentum going but faces a difficult opponent in Anisimova in the third round.

Anisimova Fights Back to Down Davis
Outplayed in the first set, No. 20 seed Amanda Anisimova fought back to defeat Lauren Davis in the second round on Thursday.
The World No. 102 Davis broke three times in the first set, while getting broken just once to put Anisimova on the back foot. But the World No. 25 clawed her way back. She got the solitary break of the second to force the decider.
Davis came back from a break down in the third to draw level at 2-2, but eventually Anisimova got a third break in the set to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 36 minutes.
This will be the 20-yer-old’s first third round appearance at Wimbledon. She had been knocked out in the second round in 2019 and in the first round last year.
The Bad Homburg quarterfinalist is a decent player on grass and will be bracing for a cracking third round contest.
Gauff v Anisimova Prediction and Tip
Although this is expected to be a close contest, Gauff’s past record at Wimbledon suggests she will hold the edge. She is in good form as well and will be aiming to make a hat-trick of fourth rounds at Wimbledon.
