Ruse Coming off a Bleak Spell

Elena-Gabriela Ruse, age 24, hasn’t had the best of times on the tour of late and her problems are not likely to be solved on the hard courts in Budapest.

The Romanian has always been a clay specialist – both her WTA finals have been on the red dirt in addition to her all six ITF trophies. However, this is not to say that she had a particularly good clay swing either. Her best result came at the Italian Open in the form of a second-round feat as a qualifier.

Ruse is 14-13 as of July 11 and has lost her last two opening-round bouts in Wimbledon and Eastbourne.

Such early losses have marked most of Elena’s season so far – the only time she managed a few good wins in a tournament was in Dubai. Starting from the prelims, Ruse made it as far as round two after beating Jasmine Paolini, Ajla Tomljanovic, and Paula Badosa.

Rakhimova, Facing a Battle

Even though Ruse is out of form and shaky, Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia is still likely to face problems.

She is 14-18 so far; the 20-year-old last played in the Swedish Open as the number eight seed and lost to Ipek Oz in round one 6-4, 6-4.

Now ranked World No. 109, most of Rakhimova’s season has gone by in these disappointing results. A couple of exceptions to this would be her quarterfinal stint in Melbourne 250 and final-four appearance in Bogota.

Kamilla managed to get wins over the likes of Beatriz Haddad Maia, Greet Minnen, and Sara Sorribes Tormo in these events. That said, she hasn’t quite managed to build on that experience.

Ruse v Rakhimova Prediction and Tip

Ruse, ranking half as many places above Rakhimova, has the advantage of being the superior player in terms of skills, experience, and pedigree. But her rusty form sets a precedent for the Russian.

An upset is on the cards but Ruse will start as the favourite.
