Sorribes Tormo Dispatches Burel

World No. 43 Sara Sorribes Tormo moved into the quarterfinals in Lausanne for the third time after she dispatched France’s Clara Burel in straight sets on Wednesday.

The fourth seed Spaniard, who was a semifinalist in 2017 and a quarterfinalist in 2018, needed an hour and 30 minutes to beat the Frenchwoman 6-4, 6-2.

Both players struggled with their serves in the first set, with Burel dropping four of her five service games and Sorribes Tormo winning just two of her five to go one-up. The Spaniard raised her game in the second set though, saving all four of the break points that she faced and converting half of the four that she held to progress.

Sorribes Tormo is yet to drop a set in the tournament. She had defeated World no. 96 Lauren Davis 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in the opener.

The Spaniard will be featuring in her fifth quarterfinal of the season and third on clay. Can she make it to her first semifinal of the year?

Garcia Makes Quick Work of Jeanjean

Facing Sorribes Tormo will be sixth seed Caroline Garcia, who is one win away from reaching a second consecutive semifinal in Lausanne.

The World no. 48, who was beaten by Clara Burel in the final four stage in 2021, has made it to the quarterfinals without being broken in the first two rounds. Garcia had won her opener against Jasmine Paolini, beating the Italian 6-3, 6-3. The Frenchwoman had saved all six break points that she faced against Paolini, while converting 3 of 7.

On Thursday, Garcia had an even easier outing, as she ousted compatriot Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-4. The experienced pro didn’t face a single break point and she converted 3 of 4 to ease past the qualifier.

This is the fourth time that the 28-year-old will be playing in the last eight. She had a cracking grass court season, winning the title in Bad Homburg last month to win her eighth career title. She also made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon. Earlier this year, Garcia was a semifinalist in Lyon and a quarterfinalist in Sydney. This is only her second clay court tournament of the season after the French Open, can she keep the winning run going?
