Wang Wins Tie-Break Epic

Wang has already made a name for herself this week by dumping the number one seed, and world number 17 seed, Barbora Krejcikova, the newly crowned Wimbledon doubles’ champion, out of the tournament.

Beating the clay court specialist in straight sets on her favourite surface is arguably the biggest win of her career to date.

Ana Bogdan of Romania, the world number 108, is less well-known, but actually gave Wang more of a contest in their second round match.

Wang began the match badly, dropping her opening service game, but recovered the break, and went on to see four set points saved. It eventually went to a tie-break, and, this time, when another set point presented itself, she was able to convert it.

This time it was the Romanian who started the second set on the back foot, dropping her first two service games. However, she got both of the breaks back, and although the pair dropped serve once more each, it went to another tie-break.

That developed into a minor match in itself. Wang had three match points saved and then Bogdan in turn, was unable to take any of the three set points on offer. After 21 points, Wang earned herself another match point, and this time she served out.

Krunic Thrashes Chinese Seed

It was as recently as the French Open that Krunic claimed her first main draw win of the season, and she went on to reach the second round there, before winning several matches on grass, even though it is not her natural milieu.

However, she has breezed into the quarter-finals in Budapest, easing past Laura Siegemund of Germany, the world number 225, in the first round without any apparent difficulty.

It was what she did in next match, though, that laid down a marker for the other women left in this tournament.

In just 49 minutes, she thrashed Shuai Zhang of China, the world number 37, and the number six seed in Hungary, racing into a five game lead in the first set, before slightly blotting her copy book by dropping her own serve.

However, she then won the next seven games in a row, whitewashing the Chinese woman in the second set, showing absolutely no mercy.

Wang v Krunic Prediction and Tip

Although Wang has the boost of the win over Krejcikova to look back on, Krunic has already shown that she has an appetite for Chinese in Budapest. The Serb will be tipped to continue her run and reach the last four.
