Pera in her Maiden WTA Final

27-year-old Bernarda Pera has made personal history in Budapest by reaching the first WTA singles final of her career. A moment like this has been long in the making for her.

Starting as a qualifier in the tournament, she defeated Katarina Zavatska and Sofia Shapatava to reach the main draw. From thereon, she knocked out Marina Ribera, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and Anna Bondar – all in straight sets.

Now ranking World No. 130, a run like this will certainly boost her confidence. In many ways, it was only a matter of time before we saw Bernarda deliver a streak like this.

2022 has been a year of firsts for Pera – she won her maiden WTA doubles title with Katerina Siniakova in Melbourne Set 1 and later was a runner-up in the Karlsruhe Challenger. Her tally is now 17-13.

Krunic Upsets Putintseva

Aleksandra Krunic has been a class apart this week in the tournament, and if she maintains the same rhythm, there is no reason why she cannot go the distance.

In the first round, she defeated Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-4 and followed it with a 6-1, 6-0 rout of the Chinese veteran Shuai Zhang. In the quarterfinal, she handed Xiyu Wang a similar defeat – losing just one game in the process.

It was the same story in the semifinal as she took out the defending champion, number three seed Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-2.

These wins have improved the Serbian’s year-to-date tally to 14-16 and brought her closer to her first singles title since 2018 June.

Krunic has had a largely uneventful year, losing mainly in the early rounds. In fact, up until now, the 29-year-old had never made it past round two in any tournament. However, she did do well on the doubles circuit by clinching the Eastbourne International title with Magda Linette.

Aleksandra is a former World No. 39 with decent clay experience and a respectable record against the top 10 players on the circuit.

Pera v Krunic Prediction and Tip

The match can go either way, but Krunic has a slight advantage owing to her pedigree. It wouldn’t be surprising if she comes out on the top, especially given how she has fared in Budapest.

However, Pera has been cruising in a similar boat and will quite likely put up a good fight. Expect an entertaining affair.
