Bublik Makes Quick Work of Kubler

Alexander Bublik needed just 70 minutes to oust Jason Kubler in the semifinal of the Hall of Fame Open on Saturday to reach the second final of the season.

The Kazakh, ranked no. 42 in the world, didn’t face a single break point against Kubler, but he converted 3 of 10, breaking the Aussie once in the first set and twice in the second to win the match 6-3, 6-2.

The third seed struck 15 aces and dropped just six points off his serve in the entire match, winning 86% of service points. He has hit as many as 49 aces in the first three rounds.

Having received a first-round bye, Bublik struck 22 aces during a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win over American Jack Sock in the second round and then struck 12 aces against sixth seed Andy Murray, during a 7-5, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinal.

Following the win, Bublik improved his season record to 22-17, and his grass record to 9-4.

The 25-year-old had earlier won his maiden ATP title in Montpellier, defeating Alexander Zverev in the title clash.

Playing in Newport for the third time, Bublik improved his tournament record 9-2. He was a runner-up in 2019 and fell in the semifinal last year. Can he clinch the title in his second final in Newport?

Cressy Ends Isner’s Streak

Maxime Cressy’s impressive season got even better as he reached the third final of the year with a three-set win over John Isner, thus ending the former’s 10-match winning streak in the tournament.

Isner had won the titles in both of his last two Newport appearances in 2017 and 2019, but could win just two matches this year. Cressy won 86% points on the back of his first serve and out-aced the World No. 22, 22-13, on his way to a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory in an hour and 52 minutes.

Cressy broke Isner twice in the first set, while the latter got the solitary break of the second. In the third, Cressy was the only one to break but that break came in a bizarre fashion. On break point in the eighth game, Cressy lobbed the ball just over the net but the ball headed back to Cressy’s side after bouncing. Isner couldn’t even touch the ball and Cressy got the decisive break, which eventually helped him into a second grass court final of the season.

Cressy, who improved to 8-4 on grass following Saturday’s win, was also a finalist in Eastbourne, where he lost to Taylor Fritz in a dramatic three-setter. This has been a breakout year for the World No. 41, who had also reached the final in his very first tournament of the season in Melbourne. Ranked No. 112 at the start of that tournament, Cressy qualified for the main draw and then kept the winning run going till the final where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal.

Cressy has struck 64 aces in the three rounds in Newport. He struck 15 against Mitchell Krueger in a straight sets opening round win and then struck 27 during a come-from-behind win over Steve Johnson in the quarterfinal. Can he win his maiden title on Sunday?

Bublik v Cressy Prediction and Tip

Expect a dramatic three-setter between the two big-servers. Bublik has a brilliant record in the tournament and could be second time lucky in Newport finals.
