Alexander Ritschard swept aside Joao Sousa 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Gstaad Open. This was Ritschard’s first career ATP tour win.

The Swiss player made his wildcard count as he had previous failed to get past the qualifying draw in three previous editions. He is 24-17 this year and has been playing very well on clay at the challenger level since mid of 2021.

Ritschard has been making progress and it showed in the Grand Slam qualifying rounds where he reached the third round of qualifying in the French Open and won all three qualifiers in the Wimbledon to reach the main draw.

Unfortunately for him, the Wimbledon points did not count. He is currently 192 in the world, 12 places below his highest career rank.
