Bautista-Agut Hoping to Shake off Poor Clay Showing

Bautista-Agut isn’t much of a clay court player, at least as compared to his exploits on the other surfaces and yet he has won 86 and lost 61 of his matches on that surface in his career.

Which is why, the Spaniard would like to do a lot better than the 1-2 win-loss record he has this year on clay.

Having lost in the second round at the Madrid Masters earlier this year, Bautista-Agut returned to the surface with a first round bye at Bastad last week. And in the second round, he went down in three sets to Dominic Thiem.

With that kind of a record, and having not played a lot on this surface the 2018 finalist at this tournament will need to get going quickly against the Peruvian qualifier. Can he win though?

Varillas Shocks Sonego

It took him an hour and 54 minutes, but Varillas managed to overcome Lorenzo Sonego in his first round here.

Varillas, who has never been in the top 100 of the ATP Rankings in his career, was a 7-6 (5), 6-2 winner, with three breaks of serves under his belt. In turn he faced just two break-points and was broken only once but did not give Sonego a single chance in the second set.

In fact, Varillas had a chance to wrap up the first set easily too as he served at 5-3 but then lost the following game to love.

In the tie-breaker that followed, he always remained ahead though, had three set-points and converted it off the third.

Varillas is now 14-12 on clay in his career, as compared to 1-4 on all other surfaces combined. Can he put up a fight here?

Bautista-Agut v Varillas Prediction and Tip

Bautista-Agut should clinch this despite his issues on this surface but that does not mean there won’t be a fight. Backing Varillas to win a set here.
