Schmiedlova on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova is 16-17 from all tournaments this season.

The World No. 76 comes to Warsaw on a three-match losing streak, a series of defeats which began in the quarterfinals of the WTA 125 in Bastad earlier this month. Schmiedlova lost in the opening round of the Hungarian Open and most recently was beaten by Jasmine Paolini in the first round in Palermo.

A three-time champion on the tour, Schmiedlova last reached a final in Hobart in 2019 (her fifth WTA final).

She won a WTA 125 title last year though, defeating Arantxa Rus in the final of the Belgrade Open. She is 11-11 on clay across levels this year. While Schmiedlova has done well at the WTA 125 level this year, making it to the semifinals in Makarska and the quarterfinals in Marbella and Bastad, but at the top level she has reached the last eight just once in Guadalajara.

Burel Struggling For Form

Facing Schmiedlova will be No. 134 Clara Burel, who is 8-17 from all her tournaments this year.

The 21-year-old French player has either lost in the opening round or faltered after winning her first round match this year. The only time she won two consecutive main draw matches this year, it was at the WTA 125 in Makarska.

This year, Burel has not even come close to how she performed in 2021. She had finished the last season with a 43-20 record, which included a maiden WTA final in Lausanne and two ITF titles from five finals.

An 18-8 record on clay was also pretty impressive last year, compared to a 6-11 run this season. A string of poor results has had an effect on her ranking as well. She began the season as a top 100 player, at No. 76, but is currently sitting at No. 134 in the world. Can she begin her climb back the rankings in Poland?

Schmiedlova v Burel Prediction and Tip

Both players are struggling currently and looking to regain form. Schmiedlova is the higher-ranked player and more experienced and will be expected to win the opener.
