Hanfmann Advances As Melzer Retires

World No. 140 Yannick Hanfmann advanced to the second round after Austrian qualifier Gerald Melzer retired in the second set of the opening round.

Melzer had taken a 0-2 lead in the first set, but the German fought back, breaking the Austrian twice and taking the first set 6-4. Both had held their opening service games in the second set, after which the World No. 188 decided to retire from the contest.

Hanfmann, who was a runner-up to Miomir Kecmanovic in Kitzbuhel in 2020, is 4-5 on the tour this season, having mostly been ousted in the qualifiers.

Santiago is the only place where he made it to the quarterfinals this year, while most recently he reached the Round of 16 in Gstaad after coming through the qualifiers.
