Edmund Returns to ATP Singles Tennis

It has been a long layoff from tennis for Edmund who had first missed the 2021 Australian Open, following which his knee did not allow him to take part in another match the entire season.

Edmund, who was a quarterfinalist at this event in 2019, then continued to remain on the sidelines all of this year as well, till making his comeback at the mixed doubles event of the 2022 Wimbledon.

He teamed up with Olivia Nicholls and won a round before going down in the second. Those two matches would have given him some confidence coming into his first singles competition for over 18 months which came on the Challenger circuit.

Edmund qualified for the main draw of the Winnipeg Challenger last week where he then proceeded to win a round. He was stunned by the 566th-ranked Alafia Ayeni in the second round but the good news is the Brit isn’t facing too many issues with his fitness woes.

Can he register his first main draw win now?

Watanuki Hoping to Add to His Recent Wins

Watanuki, who is 24 years of age, has a career win-loss record of 7-6 which includes three victories this season. And while he has never seen the inside of the top-160 rankings on the ATP circuit, Watanuki will hope to take some confidence off his showing in the qualifiers for this tournament.

He won both his qualification rounds in straight sets, defeating Andrew Fenty and Mitchell Krueger.

In fact, Krueger had started off their encounter as a 3/5 favourite to toppled Watanuki, but the Japanese player carved out a 7-6 (1), 6-3 win and seal his berth in the main draw.

Watanuki now has an advantage of playing someone who will be slightly nervous after his long layoff. Can he take advantage of that?

Edmund v Watanuki Prediction and Tip

Edmund might be the more pedigreed player overall but he has not quite been tested over the last 18 months. Expecting a tough battle that goes to three sets.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
