A quarterfinalist on his debut last year, Jordan Thompson brings an 8-15 season record to this year’s Los Cabos Open.
The World no. 114’s best on the tour this year was a run to the quarterfinals in Dallas. He hasn’t won consecutive main draw matches in any of the other tournaments.
At the Challenger level though, the 28-year-old Australian picked his eighth titles by winning in Surbiton and then reached a 13th Challenger final in Nottingham, only to finish runner-up to Dan Evans.
Thompson’s lack of consistency on the tour has been a reason for the dip in his rankings. This week he fell out of the top 100 for the first time since breaking into the top 100 in October 2018.
It will be interesting to see if he can begin climbing back the rankings in Los Cabos.

Hanfmann in Decent Form
Yannick Hanfmann’s recent form has been good, but with the clay season behind us now, can he carry his clay form to hard courts.
Two weeks ago, Hanfmann came through the qualifiers and then defeated Cristian Garin in the opening round in Gstaad, before eventually falling in the round of 16.
Building on that, the German produced his best result of the season last week, reaching the semifinals in Kitzbuhel. One of his three wins in Austria came against Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.
The 30-year-old, who also made it to the quarterfinals in Santiago, is 7-6 overall this season and 1-1 on hard courts on the tour. He hasn’t played a lot on hard surfaces over his career and could struggle on his debut in Los Cabos.
Thompson v Hanfmann Prediction and Tip
Thompson is on a three-match losing streak, which includes back-to-back first round exits in Newport and Atlanta, following his second round defeat at Wimbledon. In contrast, Hanfmann is coming off a semifinal appearance. But now the latter will have to adjust his game for hard courts. Thompson will be the favourite on this surface and expect the Aussie to advance to the next round.
