Uchida Seeks First Hard-Court Win on Tour

Qualifier Kaichi Uchida comes into Los Cabos having played just one ATP tournament – the Davis Cup in 2021, where he enjoyed victory against Pakistan’s Aisam Qureshi on grass. This tournament will be his very first main tour match on hard courts, as he faces a tough test against one of America’s rising stars.

Uchida, the Japanese number three, has enjoyed success in 2022, particularly on clay, where he won the challenger event in Oeiras earlier in June.

Considering 2021’s champion was Carlos Alcaraz, now world number four, the 27-year-old may still believe he has time to make waves on the main tour.

Uchida came through Matthew Ebden and Nicolas Barrientos in qualifying. Neither player is even ranked in the worlds top 300, and with a top 100 opponent awaiting in round 1, he will certainly come into the match as a heavy underdog.

Nakashima Hopes to Improve on Los Cabos Final

Los Cabos was the scene of Brandon Nakashima’s very first ATP final in 2021, after recording impressive wins over the likes of John Isner and Sam Querrey. 12 months on, and his status as one of the leading young talents in the sport is clear.

The American has shot up the rankings in 2022, and would be even higher as his impressive 4th round result at Wimbledon would have normally added 180 points. The sixth seed in Los Cabos has made steady progress this year, but is still seeking his maiden ATP title. Considering his performance last year, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he achieved that goal this week.

Nakashima’s most notable results have come at Grand Slams this season, after making the 4th round of Wimbledon and 3rd round at Roland Garros. His defeats to Matteo Berrettini, Alexander Zverev and Nick Kyrgios suggest that it takes a strong performance to knock him out over five sets.

It hasn’t been the most convincing season on hard courts, with a 50% record on the main tour for Nakashima. However, a recent quarter final showing at Atlanta  indicates that he is feeling good going into the next month, where the main goal will be to have a decent run at the US Open.

Uchida v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Uchida will be coming into this match full of confidence following his success in qualifying, but it is hard to look past last years runner up in Los Cabos. Nakashima should make his way through comfortably here.
