Xiyu Wang v Tatjana Maria Head to Head

They played twice and both matches happened this year. Wang on clay and Maria won on hard courts.

Shaky Hard Court Return for Wang

Xiyu Wang has had an excellent year so far with a 31-18 record however the majority of those wins came on clay. That’s her better surface at the moment with hard courts okay at best. She’s only 7-6 on hard courts and that shaky form was demonstrated recently.

After winning her first round of the Washington qualifiers, Wang lost in the 2nd round but still got into the main draw. It’s a lucky development for her but she was not that lucky with the draw. Tatjana Maria is a matchup nightmare for the Chinese player and she already beat her once this year.

Wang beat her on clay but that’s hardly a surprise considering it’s her better surface. The Chinese player is an attacking player who likes to keep rallies brief and finish off points.

That’s a very solid tennis philosophy however she can have trouble with many errors. Recently the errors have been quite prevalent in her game and that doesn’t bode against a superb defensive player as Maria.

Maria Hopeful of Good Run

Tatjana Maria played only one match since her epic Wimbledon run where she played in the semifinals. It was a match on clay in Lausanne and she lost that match to Roland Garros breakout player Leolia Jeanjean. Since then, Maria has been on a holiday to recover after a brutal year filled with tennis.

She already played 57 matches this year which is incredible and the record of 39-18 is also very impressive. It’s a shame that she’s still ranked outside of the top 100 because she played close to a top 30 level this year. Her Wimbledon run should have improved her ranking but politics got in the way.

Maria did not play too much on hard courts this year but she’s generally a fairly solid player on all surfaces. She is a good server that helps. She also generally plays a defensive style which doesn’t mesh well with players that love to finish off points quickly.

Wang is one such player and that clash of styles should favour Maria a little bit.

Wang v Maria Prediction and Tip

As noted above, this is a clash of styles. Wang will have issues in this matchup because of that and if she doesn’t play at a solid level, she will get beaten.

I think Maria will be well rested and a bit rusty. How much that will impact this game remains to be seen but I expect a close contest and Maria to emerge victorious.

Tip: Maria to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
