Medvedev Eases Past Aussie Qualifier

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev picked up his 250th tour-level victory as he ousted Rinky Hijikata in the second round of the Los Cabos Open.

Coming back into the tour after being out of action since the Mallorca Open in June, the top seed needed an hour and 32 minutes to dispatch the Australian qualifier.

The 26-year-old wasn’t broken in the match, while he converted 2 of 7 break points to win 6-4, 6-3. The victory improved the 13-time tour-level winner to 28-10 this season. He did reach three finals this season at the Australian Open, Rosmalen Open and Halle Open to take his tally to 25 finals, but hasn’t been able to win a title so far this year.

Playing for the first time in Los Cabos, Medvedev is two wins away from reaching another final. Having returned to his favourite surface, he looked good in the opener and will be eager to keep the rhythm going in the quarters.

Berankis Sees Off Bagnis

Ricardas Berankis seems to be back in the sort of form that saw him reach the quarterfinals in Dubai earlier this year.

The World No. 98 ousted Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis in straight sets on Wednesday. But the win wasn’t served to him on a platter. The Lithuanian was made to work hard for it, before he eventually succeeded in claiming the contest 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in an hour and 40 minutes.

Berankis went up a break twice in the first set, but on both the occasions Bagnis broke right back, forcing a tiebreak. Berankis edged the tiebreak to draw first blood and then got the solitary break in the second set to wrap up the contest.

The 32-year-old, who improved to 9-8 in 2022 following Wednesday’s win, had begun his Los Cabos campaign with a 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 win over France’s Quentin Halys. Can he pull off a surprise on Thursday?

Medvedev v Berankis Prediction and Tip

This should be an easy outing for Medvedev. The top seed should progress with a straight sets win.
