Stan Wawrinka v Emil Ruusuvuori Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between Wawrinka and Ruusuvuori before this.

Wawrinka on a Four-Match Losing Streak

Having won just three matches this season, it’s easy to see why Wawrinka will begin this match as a heavy underdog, having odds of 5/2 for a win in this opener.

And ever since shocking France Tiafoe in a hard-fought thriller first up at the Queen’s Club competition, Wawrinka has lost four matches in a row including one at an exhibition tournament in Hurlingham.

There are mitigating circumstances though. A former Grand Slam winner, Wawrinka has not had the best draws in any of those matches, with matches against Tommy Paul, Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner and Pabla Carreno-Busta to boot.

A couple of solid wins could help Wawrinka shrug some of his rust out and give him the kind of rhythm he needs and it could well be against a player slightly lower in the rankings like Ruusuvuori.

Will Wawrinka’s experience help though?

Ruusuvuori No Pushover on Hard Courts

He is ranked 44th in the world, two short of his career-best and while Ruusuvuori has never featured in this tournament before this, his form on clay suggests he wouldn’t be a pushover.

The Finnish number one is coming off a solid showing in Washington too, having reached the third round there. More vitally, a win over the 2021 Miami Open winner Hubert Hurkacz in the second round would have given him a strong boost for the rest of the US Open Series.

What Ruusuvuori would hope for is a little more consistency though, having reached the semifinal at Melbourne earlier this year and then ending up a finalist in Pune but having been knocked out early at the Australian Open and in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami.

Against Wawrinka, Ruusuvuori starts off a bookmakers’ favourite at 3/10 but that might not count for too much if his opponent comes out playing anywhere close to his best.

Wawrinka v Ruusuvuori Prediction and Tip

While Ruusuvuori will still hold the edge, it’s difficult to see the difference between these two being as big as Wawrinka starting out at 5/2 odds. Expecting the Swiss player to win a set.

Tip: Wawrinka to win a set – Yes: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
