Ostapenko v Kalinina Head to Head
There has been one previous meeting between the two players and it was Ostapenko who prevailed comfortably earlier this year in Eastbourne 6-3 6-2.
Ostapenko Seeks Improvement in Canada
Jelena Ostapenko will be making her first appearance since losing in the fourth round at Wimbledon at this years National Bank Open in Toronto. The Latvian will be hoping for her fortunes to change at this tournament, where she has a disappointing 2-5 record.
2022 has been another roller coaster of a year for the 16th seed. Ostapenko was the star in February after winning the tournament in Dubai and reaching the Doha final, beating the likes of Iga Swiatek, Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza.
The Latvian’s form dipped massively through the sunshine swing and the clay court season, losing five out of six matches. However, Ostapenko will be buoyed after reaching the Eastbourne final in June, and backing it up with a decent performance at Wimbledon.
Ostapenko is always one of the most feared players to face in any tournament. When her game is on, she is almost impossible to beat. Despite a stacked draw in Toronto, the former Roland Garros champion is still capable of catching fire and ending her poor streak at this tournament.

Kalinina Makes Canada Debut
While her opponent has been an ever present on tour for the last five years, Anhelina Kalinina remains one of the fresher faces on tour, after recording her best season yet. This will be the Ukrainian’s debut appearance at the Canada Open.
2022 has been a ground-breaking season for Kalinina, who cracked the world’s top 40 for the first time in January. Her most notable results at the start of the year included a fourth round showing in Miami and a quarter final in Charleston, where she defeated Elena Rybakina, now a Wimbledon champion.
The results have dried up ever so slightly for the world number 52 since reaching the quarter finals in Madrid, where she defeated three Grand Slam champions in a row. There is also some concern over her fitness, after retiring in the opening round in Budapest three weeks ago, and following it up by losing 6-1 6-0 earlier this week in her first match against Coco Gauff.
In need of snapping a three match losing streak, Kalinina could prove a significant threat to Ostapenko in Toronto. Her flat strokes, particularly on the backhand side, are difficult for any player to deal with. Ostapenko was able to exploit a weakness on the Ukrainian’s second serve in Eastbourne and is one of the hardest players to consistently hold serve against.
Ostapenko v Kalinina Prediction and Tip
A meeting on hard courts should make for a higher quality and more even match than their previous meeting on grass, where Kalinina has little experience. The Ukrainian has a great chance to grab a set, but Ostapenko will be the favourite to prevail in the end.
