2021 U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu has found the going tough this year. The World No. 10 has featured in 12 tournaments this year, but has reached the quarterfinals just twice.
One of those was in Stuttgart where she lost to Iga Swiatek, while the other last eight appearance came in Washington this week. Raducanu defeated Louisa Chirico and Camila Osorio in the first two rounds before falling to Ludmilla Samsonova in the quarterfinal.
The 19-year-old has won consecutive matches on just three occasions this season, a stat that would worry her going into her maiden Toronto Open.
Seeded No. 9 in the tournament, she will draw a lot of attention during the North American hard court season as she prepares to defend her title at Flushing Meadows. Can she live up to the hype or will the tough year continue to get tougher for the Briton?

Giorgi Begins Title Defence
Last year, Camila Giorgi won her maiden WTA 1000 title in Toronto, by defeating Karolina Pliskova in the final.
Giorgi, who has won three WTA titles from nine finals, is 13-13 this season, with her best being a semifinal appearance in Eastbourne. She was also a quarterfinalist in Birmingham and made it to the fourth round at Roland Garros.
Most recently, she played at the San Jose Open this week, but couldn’t go past her opening round, falling to Veronika Kudermetova in a tough three-set contest.
The 30-year-old World No. 29 faces a tricky opener but given the fact that she is the defending champion, she will be a slight favourite against the debutant.
