Marin Cilic v Borna Coric Head to Head

Marin Cilic leads Borna Coric by a whopping 7-0 in their head-to-head.

Cilic Playing For First Time In Nearly Two Months

Marin Cilic’s grass-court season ended in an agonizing fashion. Cilic lost in the semifinals at Queens to Filip Krajinovic in a match he was a strong favorite to progress. And on the eve of the Wimbledon Championships, he tested positive for Covid-19, forcing him to forfeit his place in the draw when he was due to play Mackenzie McDonald.

The news came as a bitter blow for Cilic who had hit a purple patch in the few months to grass-court Slam. The Croat became a French Open semifinalist for the first time at the start of June, scoring mammoth wins over the likes of Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.

Overall, Cilic should be pretty pleased with his form. He is back amongst the world’s best, sitting comfortably in the world’s top 20 and guaranteed to be seeded for the last Major at the US Open.

His preparations for the Big Apple begin in earnest in Montreal where he reached the Round of 16 twice in his career. Can he improve on his excellent record over Monday’s opponent?

Coric Shoulder Problems Resurface

Borna Coric’s progress on the ATP Tour was put on hold for almost a year after the 25-year-old decided to undergo surgery to his debilitating shoulder injury in the middle of last season.

His low-key return to action was rather slow and tedious, with Coric winning twice from his first 10 matches. But after taking the route to go down the lower rungs and playing Challenger-level tennis, he has restored a semblance of confidence in his game.

Coric won the Parma Challenger – his first title at any level since 2018. And at tour level he reached his first quarterfinal of the season at the Hamburg European Open.

But the past month has been tough for Coric, whose shoulder problems seem to have resurfaced. The former World No. 12 withdrew from Wimbledon with the same problem, and it appears to be the case in Hamburg where he retired in his last-eight match against Alex Molcan.

Coric enters the Montreal main draw with a protected ranking.

Cilic v Coric Prediction and Tip

There are questionable fitness concerns for both players who haven’t played a lot of tennis in the last couple of months. But Cilic’s superior unbeaten record he holds over his compatriot cannot be ignored in this matchup.
