Naomi Osaka v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

It’s 1-0 to Kanepi; she last beat Osaka in the 2017 US Open third round in three sets.

Kanepi, Coming Off a Superb Run

Kaia Kanepi, who at 37 years of age is the oldest player in the top 100, is coming off a brilliant start to the US Open swing.

Playing in the Citi Open last week, she made it all the way to the final after upsetting Greet Minnen, Lin Zhu, Anna Kalinskaya, and Daria Gavrilova en route. She ultimately lost to Liudmila Samsonova but reached her 10th WTA career final in the process.

With this, the veteran Estonian improved her season to 24-12 with decent results.

In January, she was a quarterfinalist in the Australian Open – a first such feat for her in Melbourne – and followed it with mid-round appearances in Miami, Indian Wells, and Charleston.

Now ranking World No. 37, Kanepi is having herself quite a year – possibly her last season before she retires. Amidst this, she will fancy her chances of a good run.

Doubts on Osaka’s Form

It has been a slow season for the former world number one, current #41 Naomi Osaka.

The four-time Grand Slam champion is 13-6 in 2022, with her last result coming from the Silicon Valley Classic; she lost to Cori Coco Gauff in round two in straight sets.

Before that, her previous tournament was the French Open. She concluded her abysmal clay swing (owing to a right ankle injury she picked up in Madrid) with a first-round loss to Amanda Anisimova.

Osaka had her moments in the first half of the season – notably in Melbourne 250 and Miami Open, where she respectively made it to the semifinal and final.

Osaka v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Naomi will start as the favourite here, but backing Kanepi may lead to good returns. After all, Kaia is no stranger to causing upsets and taking on the giants; her immense experience makes her a dangerous player.

Naomi is on shaky grounds, and despite her vast, superior pedigree, she may find herself on the back foot.
