Khachanov Stunned by Nishioka in Washington

Karen Khachanov’s defeat to Yoshihito Nishioka raised a few eyebrows on the day it happened, but on the face of it right now, the Russian may not be too down on himself after all.

Nishioka was simply unplayable in the run-up to the final (where he is due to face Nick Kyrgios at the same of writing), scoring a top-10 win over Andrey Rublev and Atlanta champion Alex De Minaur.

Khachanov’s hard-court season did get off to a good start as he defeated Dominik Koepfer in his opener in Washington before the aforementioned loss to Nishioka.

The 26-year-old has compiled a 25-18 record for the season and reached the finals of Syndey during the opening week of the 2022 season. Khachanov arrives in Montreal having made three quarterfinals in his last four tournaments.

Cerundolo Becomes Argentina’s No. 2

Francisco Cerundolo’s rise has gone under the radar in the past couple of months, but given the kind of form he has displayed in his last tournament in Hamburg, he is simply too hard to ignore now.

The man from Buenos Aires is currently enjoying his highest ceiling, having cracked the top 30 for the first time, and sits in the 25th spot in the current rankings. Only Diego Schwartzman is ranked higher among Argentine players.

Cerundolo has developed into an all-court player, refuting the notion that he is only a clay-court specialist. That view was backed by his incredible run to the semifinals of the Miami Masters earlier this year, beating the likes of Reilly Opelka, Gael Monfils, and Frances Tiafoe.

Cerundolo has earned two top 10 wins this season, one of those coming in the run-up to his maiden ATP title in Bastad where he beat Casper Ruud. His last appearance before flying to Canada was a semifinal finish in Hamburg where he lost to eventual champion Lorenzo Musetti.

Khachanov v Cerundolo Prediction and Tip

Cerundolo’s form this season means he cannot be taken lightly whichever the surface. But he tends to be a slow starter, particularly when transitioning between surfaces. Khachanov’s hard court prowess should come out on top here.
