Felix Auger-Aliassime v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

They played four times before with Nishioka leading 3-1.

Auger-Aliassime Returns Home

Felix Auger-Aliassime grew up in Montreal and there are not many chances for him to play in Canada let alone in his native city. It’s an opportunity he cherishes as he’s quite proud of his Quebecoise origins. He’ll look to bring some joy both to himself and family and friends as he uses his sixth seed draw position for a deep run.

The first challenge is a tricky one. Yoshihito Nishioka played in the Washington final last week and he’s playing superb tennis at the moment. He can bring many balls back and his lefty forehand can certainly do some damage. Felix must be very careful not to get caught up in trading blows that might see him overhit too many balls.

The serve is a weapon he needs to have on his side as Nick Kyrgios demonstrated last week. If you can keep the rallies short and get many free points from it, Nishioka looks far less menacing.

Auger looked solid in Los Cabos and a 33-19 record on the year is pretty strong for him. He’ll look to keep that going at home as he tries to improve a 9-6 record on hard courts.

Nishioka Keeps Winning

After playing in the Washington final last week, Nishioka made his way to Montreal for the Masters. He looked pretty comfortable against Paire who was upbeat and motivated. This was not the Paire of old who did not even try to play seriously but rather one that took the match seriously and played like it.

Nishioka had some trouble at times, particularly in the 2nd set but he was able to outlast some heavy pressure from Paire. That is some of the things that Auger will try to do as well and he’ll be ready for it. He’s super quick, moves well around the court and he’s a pretty solid lefty forehand.

He plays similarly to many lefties so there are ways to attack and exploit his game. The serve is a weakness for him but he is able to mask it for the most part.

Nishioka played a lot of matches on hard courts this year and has a 20-9 record with a high level shown in Washington. He’s 34-18 overall but he’s no slouch on other surfaces as well.

Auger-Aliassime v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

So, I do think this will be a very competitive match as I do think Nishioka will put up a good fight. I’m unsure whether we’ll see three sets but I would not rule it out.

The Japanese has a pretty strong H2H against Auger beating him three times, but the most recent one, two years ago in Cologne was won by Auger. I do expect the Canadian to do it again.
