Grigor Dimitrov v Alex de Minaur Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and each has a win to their name. Dimitrov won their first encounter at the US Open in 2019, but de Minaur avenged that loss in Antwerp a year later.

Dimitrov Beats Canadian Wildcard

Back in 2014. Dimitrov reached the semi-finals in Canada, and he has subsequently twice made the last eight, but he had not been in the best of form in the lead up to the event this year, sop would have been glad to get a favourable first round draw against the Canadian wildcard, Alexis Galarneau, ranked 232nd in the world.

The first set was dominated by serve, and there was only one break point offered up, which was seized upon by the Bulgarian.

However, Galarneau showed that he should not be underestimated by breaking the Dimitrov serve early in the second set.

Unfortunately for the Canadian, serving for the set, nerves got the better of him, and he allowed the number 15 seed to break back. Two games later he was broken again and Dimitrov went on to close out the match.

De Minaur Overcomes Local Hero

De Minaur, who won his sixth senior career title in Atlanta, and his first for over a year, is not the most popular man in Montreal right now.

That is because he ended the campaign of local hero, Denis Shapovalov, ranked just one place below him in the world, at the first hurdle.

The first set was so dominated by serve that there were only a handful of points scored against it by either man, until Shapovalov, serving to stay in it, suddenly faltered. De Minaur saw his opportunity and quickly took it to nose in front.

However, Shapovalov fought back with a break of his own early in the second set. He could not maintain his advantage, though, allowed the Australian to break back, and it eventually went to a tie-break.

Both men had their chances, but Shapovalov gave de Minaur a match point on his own serve, and then dropped it again at the vital moment.

Dimitrov v De Mianuar Prediction and Tip

Both men played Canadian opponents in the first round, although of differing calibres. Dimitrov is the higher ranked of the pair, and seeded, but, based on current form, the odds heavily favour the Australian.
