Swiatek Storms Into Round of 16

World no. 1 Iga Swiatek demolished Ajla Tomljanovic in just 64 minutes on Wednesday to pick up her 49th win of the season and advance to the Round of 16 at the Canadian Open.

The Polish player won the first set in no time, but faced some resistance from the Australian in the second. Both players broke each other twice in the first four games of the second set, but Swiatek raced away with the next four games for a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

The nine-time tour-level champion converted 6 of 9 break points but failed to convert either of the two that she faced. She won 54 of the 81 total points played to knock out the World no. 72 and improved to 49-5 this season.

In what’s been an exceptional year for Swiatek, the 21-year-old has already won six titles this year in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland-Garros.

Swiatek was also a semifinalist in Adelaide and at the Australian Open and most recently she lost in the quarterfinals at home in the Polish Open. On Thursday a win could put her in a10th quarterfinal of the season and a first in Toronto.

Haddad Maia Takes Down Local Hope

Beatriz Haddad Maia, too, has enjoyed a strong run this year, winning her first two titles and making considerable gains in the rankings to reach a career high of 24 this week.

Continuing to build on the solid season, the Brazilian has reached the third round of the Canadian Open on her debut.

Haddad Maia had needed three sets to win her opening round match against Italy’s Martina Trevisan, but she needed just two to dump out local hope and 13th seed Leylah Fernandez in the second round on Wednesday.

Haddad Maia required over an hour to edge out the first set in the tiebreak. But once she claimed the opening set, she breezed past the Canadian for a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory.

The 26-year-old won 76% points on the back of her first serve. She couldn’t save either of the two break points that she faced but converted 4 of 9 in an hour and 36 minutes.

Haddad Maia is 38-15 across levels this year. She won the titles in Nottingham and Birmingham and reached the semifinals in Eastbourne and Monterrey, in addition to reaching her first doubles final at the Australian Open.

Can she make the season even more impressive with a win over World no. 1?
