Sinner Rebounds to Beat Mannarino

Seventh seed Jannik Sinner bounced back from a set down to oust France’s Adrian Mannarino in the second round on Wednesday.

Sinner, who received a first round bye, extended his win streak to five matches following the 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in the second round. The World no. 12 had come into the tournament as the Umag Open champion — his first title of the season that he won by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the final.

Sinner, making his second appearance at the Canadian Open, had a tough start with the left-handed Frenchman dominating the first set. The Italian didn’t hold a single break point while he was broken twice by Mannarino, who claimed the set with ease.

The 20-year-old bounced back with a solitary break in the second set, forcing the decider. He continued his dominance in the final set as well, breaking in the very first game and then again later to seal the contest in two hours and six minutes and advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in Montreal.

The win improved the six-time tour-level champion to 36-9 this season. He has reached seven quarterfinals this year, including the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Can he reach an eighth with a win on Thursday?

Carreno Busta Routs Rune

World no. 23 Pablo Carreno Busta needed just 56 minutes to had Holger Rune a 6-0, 6-3 shellacking in the second round on Wednesday.

The Spaniard didn’t face a single break point in the match. He dropped just 10 points in the first set and converted 5 of 9 break points in the entire match to stop the 19-year-old Dane.

The 31-year-old, who had lost in the second round in both his previous appearances in Montreal, had been equally convincing in his first round win over 11th seed Matteo Berrettini. Carreno Busta didn’t face a break point in that match either, while converting 4 of 7 to win 6-3, 6-2 in just an hour and 16 minutes.

Thanks to the promising start, the Spaniard has improved his season record to 24-17. His best this year was a runner-up finish in Barcelona. Recently he made the final four in Bastad and was a quarterfinalist in Halle in another of his significant performances.

The six-time tour-level champion will be eyeing a fourth quarterfinal spot of the season on Thursday.
