Garbine Muguruza v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and both have won one apiece. Both matches came on hard court surfaces, including one at Tokyo in 2015 where Bencic sent out her opponent in straight sets and then in the same tournament in 2018 where Muguruza avenged that defeat.

Muguruza Heaves a Sigh of Relief against Kanepi

With the kind of season that Muguruza has had so far, every win counts for something more than usual and a straight-set victory in her first match at the US Open Series would have been a cause for as much joy as of relief.

Muguruza, who had gone in at 13/10 odds to overcome Kanepi, registered a scratchy 6-4, 6-4 victory in the second round. She had earlier earned herself  a first round bye.

An early break in the first set helped Muguruza take a 3-0 lead but she lost her serve in the seventh game and Kanepi levelled things up at 4-4. Fortunately for Muguruza, her opponent gave her a single break-point opportunity while serving at 4-5 in the set and she grabbed it with both hands to clinch the set.

Kanepi broke right at the start of the second set and this time around was 3-1 up before Muguruza fought back with a break in the sixth and the 10th game of the second to seal the encounter.

She would know overcoming her next opponent, Bencic would require something special but for now, there would be that flicker of hope for Muguruza following her opening win over Kanepi.

Bencic Romps Past Serena

All the headlines around tennis in the last couple of days have pointed towards Serena Williams’ retirement and that could have had an effect on Bencic coming into their second round match. Except it did not.

Bencic carved out a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Serena, needing an hour and 18 minutes to get things in order and move into the third round. That victory followed a 6-4, 6-2 rout of Tereza Martincova in her opener.

Such was Bencic’s dominance in the encounter, she faced just one break-point in the entire match and easily saved it, while breaking Serena thrice.

And while Bencic did need five set-points in the opening set to pocket it, she completed the victory off the first match-point she got.

Bencic will start a favourite against the otherwise-struggling Muguruza.

Muguruza v Bencic Prediction and Tip

Bencic is a favourite and I would have thought she would be a bigger favourite than the 3/5 odds that are on show right now. Backing her to make it to the quarterfinals and probably even in straight sets.

Tip: Bencic to win: 3/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
