Marin Cilic v Tommy Paul Head to Head

There have been two previous matches between these two players, both of which came on hard court surfaces and Cilic has won them both.

The first came in Moscow last year while the latest meet-up was in Adelaide earlier this year in which Cilic needed three sets.

Cilic Cruises Past Khachanov

In a rather one-sided encounter, Cilic showed his clinical side as he came through in an hour and 26 minutes against Karen Khachanov to make it to the third round here.

Cilic won 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 26 minutes to make it through as Khachanov struggled to get past the Brit’s serve throughout the encounter.

In turn, Cilic broke Khachanov once in the opening set and twice in the second to come through and set up a meeting with Paul.

This followed Cilic’s 6-3, 6-2 victory over Borna Coric in the first round after he had made it as far as the semifinal at the Queen’s Club competition before missing Wimbledon.

Can he now get past a player who has already sent the second seeded Carlos Alcaraz packing?

Paul with the (Second?) Biggest Shock of the Day

Some might call it the shock of the day after Nick Kyrgios’ win over Daniil Medvedev but at least in that case, the Aussie had been given a chance given his solid form.

Here, Paul was coming into his second round encounter against Carlos Alcaraz at 33/10 odds to register an upset win over the second seed. And after he lost the first set in a tie-breaker, those odds had further lengthened, and even more so when Alcaraz led 4-2 in the second set.

Paul broke back twice, missed a chance to serve out the set and then fell a match-point down in the tie-breaker that followed.

He saved it and won three points in a row to complete the equaliser, missed out on four match-points on his opponent’s serve before serving it out in the 10th game of the final set.

What this kind of a win does is fill a player up with a lot of confidence but in a tournament where matches come thick and fast daily, Paul’s three hours and 24 minute long contest could be an exhausting factor.

Cilic v Paul Prediction and Tip

Cilic hasn’t spent a lot of time on court while his opponent might come into this one a tad tired and that could be the difference between the two. Cilic starts a favourite.
