Daniil Medvedev v Botic van de Zandschulp Head to Head

Medvedev and van de Zandschulp have clashed twice in their careers with the world number one having won both times.

The first meeting came at the 2021 US Open where Medvedev edged out his opponent in four sets to reach the semifinal. They met again at a Grand Slam, the very next one in Melbourne where Medvedev won a lot more easily and in straight sets.

Medvedev Hoping to Shrug off Montreal Ousting

It was probably down to a big challenge as early as in the second round for Medvedev but he would know that defeat to Nick Kyrgios in Montreal wasn’t just down to a tough draw.

Medvedev hasn’t had the best of times all season and one says this in comparison to his own lofty standards as a world number one. Sure, he did win the Los Cabos Open in the week before the Canadian Open but we are talking about a Grand Slam winner and a player who has won 13 titles over the past four years.

Even earlier this year, Medvedev had made the final at Australian Open but hasn’t quite lived up to that kind of mark in hard court competitions. A third round defeat at the Indian Wells Open and a quarterfinal loss in Miami being exhibits A and B other than that Kyrgios loss.

What Medvedev would be desperate for before he enters his title defence at US Open is a very strong showing here in Cincinnati, starting with this opener against van de Zandschulp.

Van de Zandschulp Edges Out Cressy

It was never expected to be an easy match but van de Zandschulp, who was 4/5 odds to overcome Maxime Cressy in his Cincinnati opener did so in three sets to set up this Medvedev meeting.

World number 24 van de Zandschulp, who was coming into this competition following a second round defeat at the hands of Cameron Norrie last week in Montreal, was on court for two hours and four minutes to defeat Cressy.

The Dutchman came through 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in a match that became cagier as it went along. The first set was a cakewalk for van de Zandschulp but a strange second set that saw five breaks of serves was followed by just one in the final set.

That came in the first game of the third set and was all that van de Zandschulp needed to come through.

Things could get a lot tougher against Medvedev.

Medvedev v van de Zandschulp Prediction and Tip

On paper this looks like it could turn out to be a one-sided encounter but Medvedev has had this habit of getting tested these days in at least one of the sets. The games market, as a result, looks quite tempting.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 13/16 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
