Not long ago, there was a time this year, when World no. 1 Iga Swiatek was on a 37-match unbeaten run. She had won six titles in a row, including the French Open and four WTA 1000 tournaments. But ever since Alizé Cornet ended that streak in the third round in Wimbledon, things have been a bit tough for the Pole.
She was stunned by Caroline Garcia in the quarterfinals of the Poland Open and then upset in the second round of the Canadian Open by Beatriz Haddad Maia. It will be interesting to see if she can overcome her recent slump and regain the form that saw her claim titles in Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart, Rome and Roland Garros this year.
The 21-year-old was also a semifinalist at the Australian Open and the Adelaide-1 tournaments this year.
A win in the second round would be her 50th of the season. The nine-time tour-level champion has a 49-6 season record so far.
She has never reached the third round in Cincinnati, having fallen in the second round twice and in the opening round once. Can she make a strong start to her 2022 Cincy campaign on Wednesday?

Stephens Cruises Past Cornet
Sloane Stephens needed exactly an hour to demolish Alize Cornet in straight sets on Monday.
The American, who is making her 11th appearance in Cincinnati, raced to a 5-0 lead with three breaks of serve in the opening set, before Cornet pulled a break back. Stephens however broke again in the next game to take a one-set-to-love lead. She continued her dominance in the second set, bageling the World no. 37 and advancing to the next round.
Stephens got 77.6% first serve right and she won 71% of those points. She also saved 5 of 6 break points during a solid opening round performance.
The 29-year-old World No. 57 improved her season record to 12-12. She may have lacked the consistency, but will be happy to have broken a four-year title drought by winning the title in Guadalajara his year. She was also a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros.
She had come to Cincinnati with a 1-4 record from the past four tournaments. Having dominated the opening round, she will feel confident going into round 2 and will be hoping to reach the third round for the eighth time in Cincinnati.
Swiatek v Stephens Prediction and Tip
Swiatek is the top seed and World no. 1. Although the last three tournaments have been tough for her, she still remains the favourite to go all the way to the title. So expect her to start off well with a win over Stephens.
