They are 1-1 from their previous meetings. Krejcikova won in Dubai last year. Potapova got her revenge in Hamburg this year.

Struggling Krejcikova Searching for Form

When Barbora Krejcikova began the season it seemed she was all set for another hugely successful season. The Czech reached the final in Sydney and also made it to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open. But an arm injury forced her to withdraw from most of the clay season.

Her return to Roland Garros ended in a first round upset and then she tested positive for COVID-19 which forced her to with draw from doubles as well. As a result of the stop-start season, Krejcikova could not get into a rhythm. While she did win the Australian Open and the Wimbledon doubles with Katerina Siniakova, she has experienced a constant dip in form in singles.

Krejcikova comes to Cleveland on the back of a three-match losing streak. Since losing in the second round to Nao Hibino in Prague, she lost in the opening rounds in Toronto and Cincinnati to Karloina Pliskova and Veronika Kudermetova respectively.

The 26-year-old has also experienced a significant fall in the rankings. Having reached a career-high of No. 2 in February, the three-time tour-level champion has fallen to No. 19 in the world.

Seeded No. 1 in Cleveland there would be a lot of expectations from the Czech to go a long way in the tournament, but she will be down on confidence. And beginning the tournament against a player who beat her convincingly a month ago, doesn’t make things easier.

Potapova’s Recent Form Has Been Terrific

Facing Krejcikova will be World no. 54 Anastasia Potapova, who has been in terrific form recently.

The 21-year-old Russian, who won her maiden WTA title in Istanbul in April, reached the semifinals in Lausanne and Hamburg and the final in Prague in her three tournaments last month.

This month, Potapova didn’t start well, getting into the main draw in Cincinnati as a lucky loser and then going down fighting to Simona Halep in a three-set opening round contest.

But despite the first round exit, Potapova will be high on confidence thanks to her recent form. She was also in very good against Krejcikova in the quarterfinal in Hamburg, comprehensively beating the Czech 6-1, 6-3. So she will have the psychological edge going into this contest and will believe she can pul off an upset in the first round.

Krejcikova v Potapova Prediction and Tip

It’s a tough opener for the out-of-form Krejcikova. But the top seed will still be the favourite to edge past Potapova in three.
