Elise Mertens v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head

Cirstea has a 3-0 record against Mertens with the most recent win coming in the Istanbul final last year.

Mertens Has Struggled to Make Deep Runs This Year

World no. 33 Elise Mertens brings a 20-18 season record into the tournament. While the Belgian has featured in six doubles finals, winning one of those titles in Dubai, she has struggled to make deep runs in singles.

Mertens made it to the Round of 16 of all the three majors this year and also featured in two quarterfinals in St. Petersburg and Strasbourg, but apart from those performances she has mostly been beaten early in the tournaments.

She however looked good in her opening two rounds in Cincinnati this week, defeating Anhelina Kalinina and Karolina Pliskova in straight sets. But again found it difficult to reach the last eight, falling to Caroline Garcia.

While she tends to do well on all surfaces, hard courts have been the most productive for Mertens, where she is 10-10 this season. She will once again look to get off to a good start and this time go deep as well.

Cirstea Has Had a Decent Run in 2022

Sorana Cirstea has had another decent year. Last year, the Romanian had reached two finals, winning the title in Istanbul for her second WTA title and a first in 13 years.

This year, the Romanian has featured in three semifinals and also made a fourth round appearance at the Australian Open.

Among the semifinals that she featured in, one of them was on hard court in Lyon, one on clay in Istanbul and a third on grass in Birmingham. Although she didn’t go deep in Cincinnati, she caused an opening round upset by beating the 12th seed Belinda Bencic in three. Cirstea lost in straight sets to Petra Kvitova in Round 2.

Ranked No. 40 in the world, the 32-year-old is 20-18 overall this season and 8-8 on hard courts.

Can she make a winning start on Sunday?

Mertens v Cirstea Prediction and Tip

Mertens is the fourth seed, but the fact that she has never beaten the Romanian in three attempts may bother her. Cirstea will hold the psychological edge and could start with a win over the fourth seed.
