Not long ago she had a cast on her right leg and was walking with crutches, but Sofia Kenin is back playing competitive tennis this month and although she didn’t make a winning return, she will be hoping to regain her form in Cleveland.
Kenin, who struggled with form, injury and COVID-19 last year, suffered a right leg injury at the Indian Wells Open, following which she was sidelined for four month before she returned to Washington earlier this month.
The 23-year-old lost to Camila Osorio in straight sets in the opening round in Washington. She was competitive in her next tournament at the Canadian Open, yet went down to in the opening round to Sloane Stephens in three. In Cincinnati last week, she was once again outplayed in two sets in the opening round, this time by Shelby Rogers.
The American, who had peaked to No. 4, following her Australian Open success in 2020, is currently ranked 415th in the world. She is 2-9 this year, with her two wins coming in the first tournament of the season at Adelaide-1. Since then she has lost nine in a row. Can she end the losing streak and return to winning ways?

Hewitt Rallies Past Zacarias to Qualify
World No. 437 Dalayna Hewitt knocked out Mexico’s Marcela Zacarias to qualify for the main draw in Cleveland.
The 21-year-old was outplayed in the first set, but she made a solid comeback over the next two sets to win the contest 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Hewitt had beaten America’s Grace Min 7-5, 6-3 in the first qualifying round on Saturday.
Reaching the main draw of a WTA event is a huge accomplishment for someone who has struggled to qualify for even the ITF events this year. She did reach one ITF quarterfinal though and is 17-14 from all lower level tournaments this year. On hard courts, she is 9-7 this season.

Kenin is desperately looking to end her losing streak and on Monday, she could end the skid by breezing past Hewitt.
