Johnson Cruising in Winston-Salem

Steve Johnson is cruising in Winston-Salem scoring two wins in straight sets.

He first beat compatriot Emilio Nava and then did the same to Pedro Marinez to advance to rounce three. The American is not playing that much tennis outside of the US anymore but good performances at home keep him alive on the rankings.

Johnson is a typical American player with a strong serve, solid precise groundstrokes and the occasional venture to the net. He’s pretty strong in executing that and will beat a top 50 player if he gets the chance.

He can’t beat the best in the world but he doesn’t need to either.

He’s 26-20 on the year and quite a few of those wins came around during the grass season and the recent weeks. He played in the final here in 2018 and 2019 in the semifinal so Winston-Salem is a good spot for him. Gasquet is a tricky opponent but he’ll try.

Gasquet Not Going Away

Richard Gasquet is not going away as the French player is still playing fairly solid tennis at this stage of his career. He’s actually having a pretty good year by smartly choosing which event to play and which to skip. 23-17 is the score and most of those wins came on the ATP Tour.

He’s not moved to challengers yet but rather skipped a few weeks before returning here. Gasquet did not play in Montreal or Cincinnati but will use this event as his lone preparation for the US Open. So far it’s working for him win wins over Kamil Majchrzak and Lorenzo Musetti.

Gasquet will have a very decent shot against Johnson and he’ll be motivated to win and reach the quarterfinals. That’s the stage where he lost last year and the year before. If he keeps up playing as well as he did so far he should have a fairly decent shot against the in-form Johnson.

Johnson v Gasquet Prediction and Tip

So this is a very interesting matchup because both of these players have played really well so far in the event. Johnson has played in the final here before and looks very comfortable as he always does at home.

Gasquet has had success here in the past and he’ll hope to reach another quarterfinal. I think it will be close but somehow I think Gasquet has the slight edge. He impressed me so far and I think he’ll be able to squeeze out a win.

Tip: Gasquet to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
