Ilya Ivashka played a fabolous event last year to win his maiden trophy at this event. He faced Mikael Ymer in the final and smashed him easily 6-0 6-2. A return to Winston-Salem looks strong so far but he only played one match against Peter Gojowczyk.
Ivashka is a very solid player that enjoys playing no North American hard courts and he does it with great success. The conditions suit him well as he has a very precise serve that gives him a chance to finish off quick with his groundstrokes.
The year has been okay so far with a 17-17 record and he’s 5-4 on hard courts.
Leading up to Winston-Salem Ivashka faced some very tough draws and defeats. Most of those players are better than him so the losses are not shocking but he hopes to get in some more matches before the US Open here.

Huesler Looking Unstoppable
Marc-Andrea Huesler has already won three matches here and all those matches were quite comfortable for him. First two wins in the qualifiers and then a win over last year’s finalist Mikael Ymer. The Swiss player has a very powerful serve and when it’s working it’s almost impossible to counter.
The best bet you have against him is to wait for some poor serving and eventually it will come. If he ever learns to keep that up for an entire match he’ll be a top 50 easily but for now, he remains a fringe top 100 player at best.
He’s had a very good year so far with a 36-20 record but most of those wins came on clay. His hard court record is 6-4 and he generally doesn’t play his best tennis there. Kind of counterintuitive with his serving and aggressive play but it’s mostly a lack of playing time.
He’s looked sharp so far.
Ivashka v Huesler Prediction and Tip
Ivashka is a pretty heavy favourite in this one and it’s not hard to understand why. He’s the defending champion who returned and is showing a high level.
Husler is a good player but he is not at this level yet. I think it’s going to be closer than the odds would have you believe but I don’t see Ilya losing this.
