Coric Comes in as Cincinnati Champion

After struggling with form and injury over the last couple of years, Borna Coric is back at his best and heads to the U.S. Open as the Cincinnati Masters champion.

His first ATP 1000 title was a remarkable one, as he beat three top 10 players and the World no. 11 on his way to glory. The Croatian was ranked No. 152 at the start of the tournament, but the run to the title helped him gain 123 places and reach No. 29 in the world.

Six consecutive wins also helped in improving his season record from 4-8 at the start of the tournament to 10-8 at the end of it.

He comes to the U.S. Open having beaten Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsitsipas in one week. His other two wins also came against high-quality opponents in Lorenzo Musetti and Roberto Bautista Agut.

The 25-year-old, who reached a maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal in his last U.S. Open appearance in 2020, could be going deep once again. However, he has a difficult draw and could meet Jenson Brooksby in the second round and third seed Carlos Alcaraz in the third. But give his new found ability to surprise big names, the pressure would be on his opponents.

Couacaud Comes Through Qualifies

World no. 194 Enzo Couacaud is set to make his U.S. Open debut after he qualified for the main draw on Friday.

The Frenchman, who has made two previous Grand Slam appearances, had fallen in the qualifying rounds in Flushing Meadows thrice before. But not this year. Couacaud defeated compatriot Geoffrey Blancaneaux 7-5, 6-0 in third qualifying round to enter the main draw.

The 27-year-old Couacaud had beaten Brazil’s Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida 6-3, 6-2 in the first qualifying round and then came back from a set fown to oust Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 in the second qualifying round.

A two-time winner on the Challenger Tour and 12-time ITF winner, Couacaud has reached just one Challenger final this year, finishing runner-up in Bendigo, Australia.

He is 0-1 on the tour this year. That only main draw appearance came in Wimbledon, where he qualified for the main draw before going down fighting to John Isner in five. Can he put up a similar fight on his U.S. Open debut?
