After a wonderful 2021, it’s been a year of struggle for Tamara Zidansek in 2022.
The Slovenian heads to her fourth U.S. Open with a 9-14 season record. Zidansek reached the third rounds of the Australian Open and the French Open this year, but has found very little success in other tournaments.
Her best this year was a run to the semifinals in Adelaide-2. She eventually withdrew from the tournament without playing in the semis. But that was back in January. She had even peaked to a career high of 22 in February, but a string of disappointing results, particularly on clay, where she found so much of success last year, has pulled her down.
Now ranked No. 81, she will be hoping for her fortunes to change in Flushing Meadows. The 24-year-old, who lost in the first rounds in her first two appearances, made it to the second round last year. She is currently on a four-match losing streak and has played just one tournament during the current North American swing. That was in Granby last week, and she lost her opener to Marta Kostyuk.

Mandlik Gets a Wild Card
Facing Zidansek is American wild card Elizabeth Mandlik.
Ranked No. 144, the 21-year-old Mandlik has featured in four ITF finals this year, all on hard courts. She won three of those titles and lost the most recent final in Landisville this month.
Mandlik recently made her WTA Tour debut in San Jose. She qualified for the main draw and then defeated Alison Riske-Amritraj in straight sets in the first round. She then lost in the second round to Paula Badosa in a three set contest.
Daughter of a Grand Slam champion, Hana Mandlikova, Mandlik qualified for the U.S. Open by winning the wild card challenge. She will now be hoping to make an early impression in the tournament.

Zidansek’s form is a bit dodgy. Mandlik on the other hand is in good form and also will enjoy the crowd support. Three sets seem imminent in this contest with the Slovenian using her experience to edge through.
