Ajla Tomljanovic split from Matteo Berrettini but the Australian is playing better tennis than he is at the moment. She had a strong showing in Cincinnati, beating Paula Badosa and reaching the quarterfinals. Petra Kvitova proved better but she’s still looking really solid ahead of the US Open.
Last year it was Karolina Pliskova in round three of the event and she hopes to go further on this year. It’s been a very good year with a 28-20 record and a win against Muchova would put her at 29 which was the number of wins she had in total last year.
Tomljanovic is well suited for tennis in New York with her flat groundstrokes and powerful serves. She’s also in pretty strong form recently which the Cincinnati run highlighted. The draw is a tricky one but fair as Muchova hasn’t been playing any kind of good tennis in a long time.

Muchova Keeps Sliding
Karolina Muchova is ranked outside of the top 200 now after she is failing to play good tennis after returning from injury. Muchova missed a lot of time due to injury and her return has been anything but smooth.
A couple of nice wins here and there like the one over Maria Sakkari at the French Open have not been enough for her to turn the corner. She is 6-6 since returning but lately, it’s been mostly defeats. Her last event prior to this one was the Concord challenger and she was able to get one win in there before retiring in round two.
That was over 10 days ago so hopefully, Muchova recovered from whatever has been bugging her but things have just not been going well for her. We have no idea in what shape she will show up for this match and even when she was healthy it didn’t look pretty.

There are too many red flags surrounding Muchova here to back her. Ironically she is the better player at her peak but that’s miles away.
