Nakashima Keen to Improve Home Grand Slam Record

Nakashima has yet to hit the heights so far this season of last year, when he reached consecutive finals in Atlanta and Los Cabos, although he did make the quarter-finals of both tournaments this time round.

And prior to that, he reached the fourth round of Wimbledon, his best showing to date in a Grand Slam event.

Successive first round defeats in Montreal and Cincinnati, though, will have served as a reminder as to how tough it can be on the ATP tour.

Still he is back at the venue where he made his Grand Slam debut as a wildcard two years ago, and he went on to reach the second round that year, a feat he emulated in 2021.

He would dearly love to improve on that record.

Kotov Makes Flushing Meadows Debut

This is the second time that Kotov has qualified for the main draw of a Grand Slam event. He also made it through qualifying at Roland Garros in May, only to lose to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the first round.

Denied the chance to compete at Wimbledon this year because of his nationality, earlier this month he won his second Challenger tournament of the year on clay in San Marino.

From there, and with little or no practice on hard courts to speak of, he travelled to American and sailed through the qualifying competition, beating Felipe Meligeni Alves of Brazil, Sebastian Ofner of Austria, and the Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco without dropping a set.

Nakashima v Kotov Prediction and Tip

Although Kotov breezed his way through the qualifying competition, Nakashima will start the favourite. Despite being the younger man, he has more experience of playing n Grand Slams and has the benefit of playing in home conditions and will have the backing of the New York crowd as well.
