26-year-old Harriet Dart has just delivered one of the biggest wins of her career by knocking out the World No. 9 Daria Kasatkina.
The Russian had arrived in New York with two recent titles from Granby and San Jose, but Dart managed to stun her in the opening match of the US Open with 7-6(10), 1-6, 6-3.
More impressively, it wasn’t Kasatkina’s bad game that proved to be her undoing. Harriet was simply a class above with an impeccable 36 winners to Kasatkina’s 24.
With this, the No. 88-ranked Brit has also delivered her best result at the Flushing Meadows by reaching round two for the first time.
Her tally for the season now stands at 23-22, mired mainly with early-round losses. There have been a few instances where she did impress greatly – notably by reaching the round of 16 in Indian Wells (as a qualifier) and the quarterfinal in Eastbourne.

Galfi Moves Past Diaz
24-year-old Hungarian Dalma Galfi has also scripted personal history in the tournament by making it this far.
Her journey entailed a clinical, straightforward straight-set win over Nuria Parrizas-Diaz with 6-4, 6-3.
Now ranking World No. 91, Galfi has had a far better season than Dart, with her record now at 30-16. Among her highlights are a title run in ITF Ilkley Trophy and a runner-up feat in the Contrexeville Challenger.
Interestingly, Dalma did not participate in any of the preceding US Open swing tournaments and is playing in her first tournament since the Hungarian Grand Prix last month. This may prove to be a bit troublesome as Dart has had some practice as she featured in Washington DC, Cincinnati, Toronto, and Granby.

This match is for Dart to lose; she has momentum, form, and experience. After toppling a top 10 player, she will be on cloud nine and certainly looks primed to keep that party going.
