Paula Badosa v Petra Martic Head to Head
It’s 1-1 between the two players; they last met in the 2021 Cincinnati Open, where Badosa prevailed with a nail-biting finish of 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(9).

Fourth seed Paula Badosa was off to a rocky start on Tuesday as she beat Lesia Tsurenko 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 in two and a half hours.
The Spaniard was clearly rusty as she maintained a mere 57% first-service win rate and committed an astounding 57 unforced errors to Tsurenko’s 47. On the winners side of things, Badosa managed just five more than her Ukrainian counterpart (22 vs. 17).
It is hard to imagine Paula going further with this kind of sloppy play, but of course, this being a Grand Slam, anything can happen.
She arrived in New York with a tally of 29-16 and back-to-back first-round defeats in Cincinnati (to Ajla Tomljanovic) and Toronto (Yulia Putintseva).
That said, Badosa has had her moments – she won the Sydney International, reached the semifinal in San Jose, Stuttgart, and Indian Wells, and the quarterfinal in Miami and Charleston.

Martic Beats Gracheva
Petra Martic also endured a demanding start to her journey at the Flushing Meadows as she beat Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 7-6(3). It was a two-hour slogfest that saw the experienced Croat commit 43 unforced errors while striking 18 winners – same as Gracheva.
Looking at her track record in New York, Petra has featured in the fourth round a couple of times, but last year, she was beaten in round two itself.
As for her overall 2022 season, she is currently ranked World No. 54 – armed with a trophy from the Ladies Open Lausanne and a quarterfinal run in Indian Wells. However, most of her consistent performances have come on clay courts in Rome, Madrid, and Warsaw.
Martic has also beaten a few top 10 players over her career and will certainly fancy her chances here.
Badosa v Martic Prediction and Tip
Badosa may be the odds-on favourite, but Martic will not make things easy for her. Of course, Petra herself is not in the best form (first-round exit in Cincinnati most recently) but given her experience and pedigree, she can put up a fight. Expect an entertaining match.
