Serena Williams v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head
Surprisngly, this will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

If there were any doubts as to whether Serena Williams could end her professional tennis career on a high note, a good chunk of those were addressed on Wednesday night.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion beat the number two seed Anett Kontaveit 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2 in two and a half hours. Williams enjoyed a good service game with a 73% first service win rate, although she committed 40 unforced errors to Kontaveit’s 27.
However, Serena did dish out 37 winners, and she sailed through on the back of a roaring, supporting crowd. The win follows a straight-set rout of Danka Kovinic in the opener.
Williams arrived for her home major – where she is a six-time champion and a four-time runner-up – on the heels of just three tournaments in 2022 (early exits in all). Injury concerns kept her out of commission for a long time, and there were concerns surrounding her form.
However, the 40-year-old has an exceptional, enviable pedigree stretching across three decades and over 90 WTA career finals.

Tomljanovic Moves Past Rodina
Ajla Tomljanovic, current World No. 46, also found herself in a demanding three-setter when she played Evgeniya Rodina. She lost the first set but made a comeback and clinched the victory with 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
It was not the most clinical of the performances Ajla as she committed 57 unforced errors – far more than Rodina – but prevailed with 32 winners to her opponent’s 16. Earlier in the tournament, she had beaten Karolina Muchova in straight sets.
Tomljanovic has got some wind in her sails as she arrived at the Flushing Meadows after a quarterfinal run (as a qualifier) in Cincinnati. She had reached the same stage in Wimbledon, Nottingham Open, Rabat Open, and Istanbul Cup as well.
She is now 30-20 for 2022.
Williams v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip
Backing Serena here is the way to go. She has done the seemingly impossible tasks repeatedly over her illustrious career – and Tomljanovic is still not as formidable of an opponent compared to others.
Of course, this can just as easily swing the other way but it’s Williams’ final slam of her career – we have got to go with her on this.
